  1. Whoa! I've never even heard of this author or this series but it sounds like something I'd really enjoy! I'm gonna add it to my goodreads queue and pick it up the first book once I get through my current reads. You've got me excited.
  2. I'll start it off! My favorite read of all time is Watchmen by Alan Moore. This book/graphic novel/comic is one that I've read 9 times since I first received it from a friend in 2010. I have done an almost annual re-read since then. Last year was the first year that I did not. It's the only graphic novel to make Time Magazine's All-Time best 100 English language Novels from 1923 to 2005. It ranked at #18. The comic is based on an alternate timeline of the world where superheroes came into existence in the 1930s and had major social influence through major events such as the Vietnam War and Nixon Administration. Due to protests by civilians and police against them, they become outlawed and the story takes place in the 1980s during the Cold War as nuclear armageddon becomes more and more of a reality and the heroes of the disbanded group "the Watchmen," attempt to discover who is trying to kill them off and potentially cause world disaster. It's a great take on realistic heroes and the problems they face as people. It has its moments where it feels like a normal comic book, but then uses that against you as the reader to throw plot twists into the story. The writing and illustration are superb and I recommend it to most anyone, even non-comic readers.
  3. Welcome to the Book Club. First rule of book club is... always talk about books! Post books you've read and have meant a lot to you. Post books you've wanted to read and want to hear what others thought of them. Post books you've read and want others to read along with a review. Or just post pictures of awesome books. Whatever works for you!
  4. Bottom Line Up Front: The 8th ID will continue running once a month open realism events that will have map(s) with historical ties to WWII battles and will walk those who attend through the events of the war from start to finish. The first event with be March 10th at 8:30 pm CST on our realism server. For more details and the dates for all events, keep reading below. The 8th Infantry Division has decided to continue running the year-long World War II campaign throughout 2021 that was originally being run by the 6th RB. This will occur once a month, every month, for the rest of 2021 through December. The dates and times are listed below and on the calendar of events on this site. The purpose of this series of events is to honor the history and legacy that is tied to both Day of Defeat: Source and the 8th Infantry Division which our unit is named after. Each event will run similar to a normal open realism night with the following additions: -We will begin the night on a map that has been chosen because of its tie to a historic WW II battle. -The event host for the night will explain the history tied to the map and battle, the importance to WWII, and any specific unit whose history is tied to that battle (e.g. the 82nd Airborne and Operation Market Garden). -This first part will take between 5-10 minutes and afterward the night will continue like normal. Leaders will select weapons, teams, and sides then play under normal realism rules for our server. Once the map is completed, the rotation will continue like most nights with the host choosing maps through votes or their own choice the rest of the night. -Some nights may have multiple maps in a row with historic significance. All maps for each night are listed below as well as on the calendar. For those in the 8th: -Participation is completely voluntary but will be tracked for possible awarding of campaign medals. -You will be eligible to earn different levels of the "World War II Victory Medal" based on how many months' events you make (1, 3, 6, or all). -If officials are agreed upon with other units, those will come with the opportunity to earn either the "European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal" or "Asian Pacific Campaign Medal", depending on which month and battle the official is covering. We look forward continuing this event throughout the year for everyone and hope that many of you will join us throughout this year to gain a new understanding of the connection between this game and the history behind it. These are My Credentials, -2Lt. R. Rotte
